Sheridan Interactive Work at the Ontario Premier’s Innovation Awards

April 20, 2009

Gesture interactive works developed by two groups of Sheridan Interactive Multimedia students are being displayed at the Ontario Premier’s Innovation Awards ceremony on May 15th at MaRS in Toronto.

The work will be projected on the floor and walls of the reception area and features gesture technology from Gesture Tek.  People will wave to interact with elements of our innovations. In one of the features, the names of the guests will be read from QR Code readers and placed on shapes such as atoms and wind. The letters of the name will then animate to gestures.

The projects are two of the Sheridan Interactive Multimedia one year post grad program’s client projects where the students work in groups with live clients. Another group is working with Infusion to create prototypes for multitouch tables like Microsoft Surface. Spy Films in Toronto is also working with a group to create an interactive video installation for their walls during their 15th anniversary of their famed Media Agency Party.

PREMIER’S AWARDS

The Premier’s Innovation Awards was created to recognize and reward Ontario’s top researchers and innovators that are successfully turning global challenges into the next generation of jobs for the province.

There are three categories of Premier’s Innovation Awards:

The Premier’s Catalyst Awards help build a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in Ontario by recognizing excellence and leadership in innovation.

The Premier’s Discovery Awards celebrates the research excellence of Ontario’s most accomplished researchers.

The third category, the Premier’s Summit Award is administered by MaRS. This Award provides research support to a small number of outstanding medical researchers, helping attract them to or retain them in Ontario and enabling them to significantly expand their research programs.

Below are some stories from International students in the past. Canada is rich in diverse cultures and our International students have found they fit right in and obtain a valuable education. It is a very positive cultural experience for them, the other students and faculty. We welcome you!

My experience in the Sheridan Interactive Multimedia class…

I loved the atmosphere in IMM class, it was a fun space where you can pick what you love, focus and work on it. The instructors were supportive to what you are doing. I learned a lot of programming knowledge from the course – because I love multimedia programming.

My classmates were friendly and helpful to me as an international student (it was my first visit to north America). I loved working with them in the lab and hanging out, they are all very cool people. Writing up this paragraph, I am missing my school life now.

I really loved the Toronto environment and Oakville’s community – air is clean, people are really friendly. It is a great place!

I always wanted to develop my computer skills. When I decided to come to Canada and take the Interactive Multimedia post graduated program at Sheridan College I had great expectations. Now, one year later, I can say my expectations were met. The teachers are high skilled professionals and they are always up to date with the new technologies on the market. The students come from all sorts of backgrounds and it makes a great learning environment. The class Infrastructure has the top technology on hardware and software. It is just the right place to learn about multimedia development.

Natalia Rojas (Columbia)

I have no words to describe how happy I am to have made the decision to go to Sheridan and complete the Interactive Multimedia post graduate program! The different courses offered and the projects I got to work on were not only interesting but very fun and exciting! I will never forget all the great people I got to meet and spend so much time with 😉 And thanks to our knowledgeable mentors who taught us so much and motivated us every second! What a great experience!! 🙂

Interactive Multimedia at Sheridan College, Canada is a fascinating program with latest courses for today’s industry which will keep me updated with the trend. The always ready to help teachers, Dan, Andrew, and Ian make this program a success.

Sheridan is known for its reputation in Canada. I applied to two Ontario’s renowned colleges (Sheridan and Humber) and fortunately chosen by both. Even though Humber College was offering me $1000 scholarship, still I chose Sheridan College because even sitting away, half-way around the world I was familiar with Sheridan and its reputation.

Interactive multimedia is about learning how to code, producing visual design, editing and affecting video, making motion graphics, and creating interactive environments where you can control the interface or game without using any mouse or keyboard, but cameras by moving your body in front it. To know more about interactive environments you can visit my blog at http://imm-param.blogspot.com/ .

My classmates are from different backgrounds like graphic design, programming, engineering, photography, medical science, commerce, finance, etc. It makes me wow when I mix my design and programming skills together to produce the result.

I think Sheridan is the perfect choice for me and I think you will also love it doing the Sheridan way. Good luck with your applications!!!
