FITC Wearables 2014

Had a great time at FITC Wearables 2014 – congrats to Shawn and crew.  It was good seeing old friend Computer Steve (Mann) who was doing the keynote.  Also nice to meet Dr. Helen Papagiannis, Sheridan IMM (2001) who did a great job co-hosting the conference in digital dress (a MeU.  Professor, Dan Zen, was there wearing Hangy trying to convince everyone they can just wear their current devices.  Got to try the Muse and meet Kate Hartman.  Loved seeing the Myo in action.  It was great to see a bunch of IMM grads in attendance at displaying projects such as the award winning Sleepy Hollow Oculus Rift feature by Ryan Andal (IMM 2003) at Secret Location.  IMM 2001 grad Matt Fabb also worked on that project.  Our current students were out volunteering and connecting.

Sheridan Interactive Media Doubles HTML5 Teaching by adding CreateJS

Sheridan Interactive Media (IM), formerly Sheridan Interactive Multimedia (IMM), has taught both the HTML side and the Flash side of Interactive Media for over fifteen years. Now, with improvements in HTML and overwhelming industry support, IM will take the teaching hours from Flash and apply them to advanced interactivity in HTML, CSS and JavaScript commonly known as HTML 5 but perhaps it would be more accurate to use the acronym: HCJ.

HTML5Professor, Dan Zen, has been one of the longest standing supporters of Flash having amassed countless libraries of code – for instance his Flash Feathers series of advanced interface classes: http://flashfeathers.com. He will now work his way through the converting classes to the HCJ platform as have many Flash coders before him.

In addition to past Flash features, Zen has been building informational Web pages and apps in HCJ for many years and last year launched one of the most complex HCJ parallax projects for the entrance to the Dan Zen Museum at http://danzen.com.

Visitors can swipe, drag, mousewheel or page up the stairs of the museum and the characters on the stairs move in 3D parallax. “In a sense, the Museum steps project was a test to see the performance of HTML 5 and it turned out very well.” says Zen.

The museum feature was built using the CreateJS framework http://createjs.com and more specifically EaselJS to manipulate the new Canvas tag in HTML 5.

Grant Skinner, who founded the CreateJS libraries is a renowned Flash developer who moved over early to help out the HCJ world. Skinner says:

“We are excited that the CreateJS libraries and tools are being taught by prime educational institutions like Sheridan. Sheridan graduates have a strong influence on the interactive media culture and they will surely add to the success of CreateJS being used in creative digital applications such as Professor Zen’s Museum.”

Zen explains, “Removing Flash will essentially double the time applied to the HCJ platform allowing the students to go deeper into more advanced interaction like multiuser, physical computing, gaming and mobile apps essential to advancing our Canadian digital culture.”

Brain Controlled Artificial Intelligent Mobile Remote Virtual Reality Accessories!

Sheridan Interactive Multimedia has a multimedia pioneering course that we have been running for almost 10 years.  It certainly has been exciting keeping up with the near future for so many years.  Some highlights for guest speakers have been: Bill Buxton, David Rokeby, Steve Mann, Vincent Jon Vincent, and dozens more.

We make sure the students build prototypes in technologies like multiuser, gesture tech, mediated reality (augmented and diminished).  We have prototyped tilt and multitouch for years – now these have moved into regular curriculum.

For the last few years we have also run club projects where groups run a club for various technologies.  For instance, last year we had Holograms, Reality Gaming, Ardino, Shape Recognition and Voice Recognition clubs.  The year before that was Wands, Second Life, Augmented Reality, iPhone, and 3D Vision.
