FITC Wearables 2014

November 15, 2014

Had a great time at FITC Wearables 2014 – congrats to Shawn and crew.  It was good seeing old friend Computer Steve (Mann) who was doing the keynote.  Also nice to meet Dr. Helen Papagiannis, Sheridan IMM (2001) who did a great job co-hosting the conference in digital dress (a MeU.  Professor, Dan Zen, was there wearing Hangy trying to convince everyone they can just wear their current devices.  Got to try the Muse and meet Kate Hartman.  Loved seeing the Myo in action.  It was great to see a bunch of IMM grads in attendance at displaying projects such as the award winning Sleepy Hollow Oculus Rift feature by Ryan Andal (IMM 2003) at Secret Location.  IMM 2001 grad Matt Fabb also worked on that project.  Our current students were out volunteering and connecting.

Sheridan Interactive Multimedia Alumni Win at FITC Awards 2012

April 30, 2012

Jam 3 Crew!

Secret Location Crew!

Wow!  What a night at the FITC Awards, firstly, I was getting there early, walked around the corner and bumped into Vincent Morriset coming the other way – the doors were not open yet.  So we went for a drink at the Office Pub (current home of FITO) and had a great talk about interactive storytelling, etc.  Highlight of the conference for me and it was a great conference!

FITC Awards - Future, Innovation, Technology and Creativity

I arrived at the awards just as the first award was being awarded – and it went to Jam 3, founded by three IMM alumni (Pablo, Mark and Adrian) as did the next award.  That was followed by Secret Location winning (Ryan Andal is there) and then Jam 3 again – after that, I lost track ;-).  Joanna Ong, graduate from last year was a Developer’s Site finalist as well!  Congrats to you all and all the other winners!

David Neumann to Give First SPOTLIGHT HTML5 Talk

December 2, 2011

David Neumann, the Web Design / Web App Development teacher at IMM is giving the first talk at the Spotlight HTML5 event in Toronto on Saturday Dec 3, 2011.

In this session we will walk through the main features of the HTML5 Geolocation API. From privacy concerns to fall back plans if location can’t be determined, we will look at an overview of what is for now an optional “nice to have” on many mobile web applications, but will be in the future a standard feature with interesting potential.

Hope you can make it there – SPOTLIGHT HTML5

Sheridan Interactive Multimedia Students’ Fist-Bump App a Success at FITC Conference

May 6, 2011

The Sheridan IMM Fist-bump booth at FITC 2011 - Scan Screen

FITC, one of the largest and longest running design and technology conferences in the world, had its 10th anniversary and the Sheridan Interactive Multimedia students provided an installation piece using Flash and FLAR (Augmented Reality) connected up to Facebook for a social media connection.

The installation let visitors digitally fist-bump each other (10 year anniversary) with the winner being the person with the most fist bumps.  The process was to first find out who they were by scanning a FLAR marker on their conference badge then to capture their face for a customizable avatar.  At this point they could also connect their marker to their Facebook account.  On a big screen, they scanned again to fist-bump a challenger who had followed the same process.  Big fists did the bumping, the totals were tallied and the winner was presented along with the custom avatars.  It was always a laugh seeing people’s avatars.  Your bump partner’s contact info was then sent off to Facebook.

Overall there were about 400 unique fist-bumpers and lots of smiles and contacts made.  Congrats to the group for their hard work: Abeiene Nejar, Antonio Carito, Cherry Argana, Darren Neville, Jacky Kam, Joanna Ong, Justin Howlett, Tyler Lindo and Tyson Leslie.  The students explored a wide range of advanced interactive technologies such as augmented reality, face recognition, social media API’s, as well as traditional work with coding, motion graphics and database work.

If you would like to talk to the students or find out more about the project and program, please note we are having an open house on Friday, May 13 – click SUPERSTITION to find out more.  Thanks to Shawn Pucknel at FITC for providing the students with such a great opportunity.

February 19, 2011

Sheridan Interactive Multimedia 2011 client projects consist of sites, social media and apps for The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the FITC Design Conference, and the Almost Naked Animals TV show.  We are doing a couple projects for each of the latter two and working with the Sheridan York Design program on His Honor’s site.  The client projects are part of the one year post grad curriculum and are managed through our Project Management course drawing from each of the other courses for content design and creation.  http://imm.sheridanc.on.ca

THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR OF ONTARIO
It was a great experience for our faculty and student to meet His Honour and hear his vision for a more interactive and social Web presence including facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels.  The students look forward to the challenge of designing for fresh ideas while reflecting our heritage.

IT’S ALIVE! Sheridan Interactive Multimedia Open House

We are having our Sheridan Interactive Multimedia Open House at Function 13 this year in Kensington Market in Toronto.  This is the home of FITO – the largest Flash User Group in the world and also FITC – one of the top digital media conferences.  As such… we are thankful for Shawn and the crew for providing a FREE FITC Ticket as a door prize!  So come on out!

The invite this year is exciting as usual.  It was created by the students and in particular Rob, Salpy and Matt with theme and organizational help from all of us.   It includes an interactive augmented reality 3D portion.  You print a page and look at the page with a Webcam and it shows a surprise 3D figure.  This is something that we will be continuing at the open house in a very amusing way 😉 and also is involved in how we give away the FITC ticket.

Here is a link to the Invite:

Anyone can see the invite but for the second stage with the FLAR and 3D portion you will need to have a Webcam – if you don’t or just want to take a quick look at what it is like… here is a video of professor Dan Zen trying it out:
