Jam 3 Wins Best Design Team and Best Development Team at Digi Awards!

December 7, 2011

Jam 3 won two Canadian Digi Awards (formerly Canadian New Media Awards) this year – 2011.  The incredible fact is that one was for the Best Design Team and the second was for the Best Development Team.  Way to go!

Jam 3 was founded in 2003 by three Sheridan Interactive Multimedia graduates Adrian Belina, Pablo Vio and Mark McQuillan.  They have since grown into a most excellent interactive team which also includes a number of IMM grads.  You can see the folks at Jam 3 in their creative assessment of what their team does http://jam3.com.  Here is a quote from Adrian Belina, one of the founders:

It a special evening when you are honoured for being tops in both Design and Development. These awards are especially nice because they’re not just about one project that a few people worked on… they speak to the hard working, passionate teams that make it all happen, all year round. Very proud of everyone at Jam3 right now.

These awards are also a great success for the IMM program as not only the partners, Mark, Pablo and myself, graduated from the IMM class but we also employ 3 developers from the program as well. A true testament to the quality of the program!

Stitch Media founded by IMM graduate, Evan Jones, also won a Digi Award for Best in Digital Advertising for the site Drunk and on Drugs.  Congrats Evan!

Sheridan Interactive Multimedia is now accepting applicants for 2012.  Great jobs!  Great careers!  Advance our culture making interactive fun and useful stuff!  Designers, come on in and learn how to make your work… work!  Programmers come on in and learn how to program in an interactive environment beyond navigation. Other disciplines like Marketing, Engineering, Illustration, Animation, Computer Science, welcome!  Get with the mobile revolution!

Sheridan Interactive Multimedia Visual Tour

July 2, 2011

Sheridan Interactive Multimedia Visual Tour
We used this picture as a visual tour for the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario to show them some of the works of our students.

For the presentation, we used a Flash AIR app called OrbitZoom (By Professor Dan Zen) to show the picture.  Being an AIR app, it works on the desktop as an image viewer or can easily be converted to mobile as AIR is on or can be published to iOS, Blackberry Playbook and future Blackberries, and Android devices.  There is a Web version CLICK HERE  Click the picture zoom and click the picture to stop zooming.  Press A for actual size – pan around by dragging.  Double click to return to full picture.

The Sheridan Interactive Multimedia one year post grad program is accepting applications for this September.  Please see our site at http://imm.sheridanc.on.ca.

Below are some stories from International students in the past. Canada is rich in diverse cultures and our International students have found they fit right in and obtain a valuable education. It is a very positive cultural experience for them, the other students and faculty. We welcome you!

Man Kai Kit (Hong Kong)

My experience in the Sheridan Interactive Multimedia class…

I loved the atmosphere in IMM class, it was a fun space where you can pick what you love, focus and work on it. The instructors were supportive to what you are doing. I learned a lot of programming knowledge from the course – because I love multimedia programming.

My classmates were friendly and helpful to me as an international student (it was my first visit to north America). I loved working with them in the lab and hanging out, they are all very cool people. Writing up this paragraph, I am missing my school life now.

I really loved the Toronto environment and Oakville’s community – air is clean, people are really friendly. It is a great place!

Rodrigo Pluciennik (Brazil)

I always wanted to develop my computer skills. When I decided to come to Canada and take the Interactive Multimedia post graduated program at Sheridan College I had great expectations. Now, one year later, I can say my expectations were met. The teachers are high skilled professionals and they are always up to date with the new technologies on the market. The students come from all sorts of backgrounds and it makes a great learning environment. The class Infrastructure has the top technology on hardware and software. It is just the right place to learn about multimedia development.

Natalia Rojas (Columbia)

I have no words to describe how happy I am to have made the decision to go to Sheridan and complete the Interactive Multimedia post graduate program! The different courses offered and the projects I got to work on were not only interesting but very fun and exciting! I will never forget all the great people I got to meet and spend so much time with 😉 And thanks to our knowledgeable mentors who taught us so much and motivated us every second! What a great experience!! 🙂

Parampal Randhawa (India)

Interactive Multimedia at Sheridan College, Canada is a fascinating program with latest courses for today’s industry which will keep me updated with the trend. The always ready to help teachers, Dan, Andrew, and Ian make this program a success.

Sheridan is known for its reputation in Canada. I applied to two Ontario’s renowned colleges (Sheridan and Humber) and fortunately chosen by both. Even though Humber College was offering me $1000 scholarship, still I chose Sheridan College because even sitting away, half-way around the world I was familiar with Sheridan and its reputation.

Interactive multimedia is about learning how to code, producing visual design, editing and affecting video, making motion graphics, and creating interactive environments where you can control the interface or game without using any mouse or keyboard, but cameras by moving your body in front it. To know more about interactive environments you can visit my blog at http://imm-param.blogspot.com/ .

My classmates are from different backgrounds like graphic design, programming, engineering, photography, medical science, commerce, finance, etc. It makes me wow when I mix my design and programming skills together to produce the result.

I think Sheridan is the perfect choice for me and I think you will also love it doing the Sheridan way. Good luck with your applications!!!

Sample Flash AS3 Code to Help Designers and Developers Handle Data and Communication

February 7, 2008

Key to the Sheridan Interactive Multimedia program curriculum is teaching learners to build environments in which end users can communicate with each other. To do this, we need interfaces for input and display and we have to get data to and from the server. Think facebook, flickr, YouTube, etc.

Adobe Flash provides many communication classes and methods such as:

  • User Interface Components:
    • Button
    • CheckBox and RadioButton (Check Box & Radio Button)
    • ComboBox and List (Combo Box)
    • TextArea, TextInput and Label (Text Area & Input)
    • NumbericStepper and ScrollPane (Numeric Stepper & Scroll Pane)
    • Slider and TileList (Tile List)
    • DataGrid (Data Grid)
  • navigateToURL to load a Web Page from Flash
  • SharedObject to save a Flash “cookie”
  • FlashVars & SWF Query String to pass variables into Flash
  • ExternalInterface to call a function in Flash from JavaScript
  • Loading a SWF with Loader and URLRequest
  • FileReference to upload a local file to be used by flash
  • URLLoader and URLVariables to retrieve text or server output
  • XML to send and receive XML
  • Web Services to connect to scripts on other servers
  • Remoting to avoid serializing and deserializing data

Here are links to content examples from our curriculum for all of the above except Web Services and Remoting. The Sheridan lessons include more than the content – there are supporting lesson plans, definition documents, steps for building, supplementary links, reflection forms, and in class explanation, lab work, assignments, exams and final projects. If you are looking into schooling in multimedia, please visit the Sheridan Interactive Multimedia site for more information on our one year post grad program.
