Creating Mobile Games and Apps a Reality for Sheridan Interactive Multimedia

February 28, 2011

After ten years of prototyping mobile apps… WAP (2001), Flash Lite Apps for PDA’s (2005) , tilt emulators (2008), etc. we finally have games and apps running on real mobile devices at Sheridan Interactive Multimedia one-year post grad program.

We had a few running second term last year but now all the students have them on iOS, Android with Windows Mobile 7 and Blackberry just around the corner.  In class we have a dozen iPhone, iPod Touc, iPads, Android ViewSonic and Samsung Galaxy devices.  The students have apps up and running on the devices primarily through using the Adobe Flash / AIR packagers for iOS and Android which lets them build once and publish across many devices.  We have a quick look at the native iOS apps as well and some of the students have done personal project work in this area.

Tyson Leslie's Punch Driven Android App

The tools and techniques to prepare apps for mobile devices are still in their early stages often requiring a dozen steps with installs and command lines, etc.  to run emulators, handle signing, etc.  We have been working through these steps in our second term Multimedia Pioneering course and some of the notes and discussion can be found on our Flash to Mobile Facebook group which is open to everybody to join.  The skills to build the applications in general are embedded in our other courses from Web Authoring, Motion Graphics, Web Design and Application Development where Web based apps are also looked at.

William Chong's DumbBots

The response from the students when seeing their apps on actual devices was so exciting.  Here are a few blog posts of the experience – certainly not all roses but that’s what happens when you pioneer technology.

Will –
Greetings Pioneers! Let’s continue the MOBILE-STREAK!

Joanna –
At last, I finally got some of my flash applications into the iphone! I’ve been waiting for this moment since the start of the term!!

Antonio –
I can now put my apps on Android devices!

There were many more and we look forward to presenting the apps at our Open House in April or May – stay tuned!

We are having our Sheridan Interactive Multimedia Open House at Function 13 this year in Kensington Market in Toronto.  This is the home of FITO – the largest Flash User Group in the world and also FITC – one of the top digital media conferences.  As such… we are thankful for Shawn and the crew for providing a FREE FITC Ticket as a door prize!  So come on out!

The invite this year is exciting as usual.  It was created by the students and in particular Rob, Salpy and Matt with theme and organizational help from all of us.   It includes an interactive augmented reality 3D portion.  You print a page and look at the page with a Webcam and it shows a surprise 3D figure.  This is something that we will be continuing at the open house in a very amusing way 😉 and also is involved in how we give away the FITC ticket.

Here is a link to the Invite:

Anyone can see the invite but for the second stage with the FLAR and 3D portion you will need to have a Webcam – if you don’t or just want to take a quick look at what it is like… here is a video of professor Dan Zen trying it out:

Please drop on by the event page in facebook and RSVP!

Sheridan Interactive Multimedia Open House 2007

Click here to go to the IMM site where you can get a bigger picture of the invitation.

All are welcome. Our graduates will show their portfolios which include:

Gesture prototypes are featured where you wave at a Web cam to control interactivity on the screen. These projects use a $10 Web cam and the Flash plugin – that is it. Come and find out how it is done.

Mobile prototypes will be shown in an iPhone shell – as we eagerly wait for the revolution to roll. Focus is on location based features.

We have introduced a new Application Development course that consolidates our database (SQL Server, MySQL) and server scripting work (, C# and PHP) and readies the graduates for Web 2.0 type work.

Featured are several e-learning sites, social sites, a site about Steve Mann the world famous cyborg, Gesture Tek technology with Vincent Jon Vincent and a site about Bill Buxton – famous designer and innovator. The latter three projects are for the Government of Canada to showcase Canadian digital technologies and innovators at trade shows and events in China.

If you are in the industry and/or interested in these technologies, please come on out – you will get to try out the work in a comfortable exploratory environment – it is kind of like going to the science center! We look forward to seeing you and encourage you to consider our excellent graduates for positions in your company.

If you are interested in learning interactive multimedia, we invite designers, programmers, engineers, artists, marketers and people from related areas to take our one year post-grad program and learn to design and code with interactive multimedia. We teach how to build environments with interactivity beyond navigation in which people can communicate and create content.

Please pass this information on to anyone interested.

Thank you for your attention, we hope to see you soon!
