CreateInTO Presents Dan Zen on ZIMjs

CreateInTO Presents Dan Zen on ZIMjs

Inventor, Dan Zen, will give an introduction talk about the ZIMjs library of interactive media modules at the upcoming CreateInTO event, 7PM on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at the Handlebar in Kensington Market, 159 Augusta Avenue, Toronto, ON, Canada.

zim.drag(circle); plus 60 more fantastic functions!

Inventor, Dan Zen, introduces ZIMjs – a free library of interactive media modules. CreateJS gives us the nesting power of Flash. ZIMjs extends CreateJS to give us new hit tests, parallax, damping, components, swipes, grids, guides, responsive layouts for mobile and more making front end coding easier. Bring a colleague out to CreateInTO to learn about the new jQuery of the Canvas – ZIMjs.

CreateInTO is a user group of creative developers, designers, hackers, makers and more.  Everyone is welcome to the Wednesday meetup:  http://www.meetup.com/CreateInTO/events/220783293/ There will be two tickets to the FITC Conference given away to winning attendants, courtesy of FITC, a founding supporter of CITO.

Dan Zen is a professor of Interactive Media in the Sheridan Interactive Media one year post grad, Oakville, Canada where students learn to build mobile and Web environments in which users can create, communicate and play.

FITC Wearables 2014

November 15, 2014

Had a great time at FITC Wearables 2014 – congrats to Shawn and crew.  It was good seeing old friend Computer Steve (Mann) who was doing the keynote.  Also nice to meet Dr. Helen Papagiannis, Sheridan IMM (2001) who did a great job co-hosting the conference in digital dress (a MeU.  Professor, Dan Zen, was there wearing Hangy trying to convince everyone they can just wear their current devices.  Got to try the Muse and meet Kate Hartman.  Loved seeing the Myo in action.  It was great to see a bunch of IMM grads in attendance at displaying projects such as the award winning Sleepy Hollow Oculus Rift feature by Ryan Andal (IMM 2003) at Secret Location.  IMM 2001 grad Matt Fabb also worked on that project.  Our current students were out volunteering and connecting.

Sheridan Interactive Media Doubles HTML5 Teaching by adding CreateJS

October 29, 2014

Sheridan Interactive Media (IM), formerly Sheridan Interactive Multimedia (IMM), has taught both the HTML side and the Flash side of Interactive Media for over fifteen years. Now, with improvements in HTML and overwhelming industry support, IM will take the teaching hours from Flash and apply them to advanced interactivity in HTML, CSS and JavaScript commonly known as HTML 5 but perhaps it would be more accurate to use the acronym: HCJ.

HTML5Professor, Dan Zen, has been one of the longest standing supporters of Flash having amassed countless libraries of code – for instance his Flash Feathers series of advanced interface classes: http://flashfeathers.com. He will now work his way through the converting classes to the HCJ platform as have many Flash coders before him.

Advanced Interfaces in Flash to be converted to HTML 5

In addition to past Flash features, Zen has been building informational Web pages and apps in HCJ for many years and last year launched one of the most complex HCJ parallax projects for the entrance to the Dan Zen Museum at http://danzen.com.

Visitors can swipe, drag, mousewheel or page up the stairs of the museum and the characters on the stairs move in 3D parallax. “In a sense, the Museum steps project was a test to see the performance of HTML 5 and it turned out very well.” says Zen.

The museum feature was built using the CreateJS framework http://createjs.com and more specifically EaselJS to manipulate the new Canvas tag in HTML 5.

Grant Skinner, who founded the CreateJS libraries is a renowned Flash developer who moved over early to help out the HCJ world. Skinner says:

“We are excited that the CreateJS libraries and tools are being taught by prime educational institutions like Sheridan. Sheridan graduates have a strong influence on the interactive media culture and they will surely add to the success of CreateJS being used in creative digital applications such as Professor Zen’s Museum.”

Zen explains, “Removing Flash will essentially double the time applied to the HCJ platform allowing the students to go deeper into more advanced interaction like multiuser, physical computing, gaming and mobile apps essential to advancing our Canadian digital culture.”

We look forward to an exciting year in Interactive Media.

Sheridan IMM Alumni TVO Ping Pong App Makes iTunes Front

February 1, 2013

Sheridan IMM TVO Ping Pong mobile app

Sheridan Alumni – David Neumann (2004), Paul McMonagle (2010) and Yohei Yamaguchi (2012) worked on the TVO Ping Pong App available in the iTunes app store at https://t.co/JfyZtoua.  The app was featured on iTunes Canada and has received over 10,000 downloads.  Congratulations!

Neumann is Manager – TVO IdeaShaker Innovation Lab and also teaches Web Design and Development in the IMM program.  He reports that the alumni created the idea for the app, the game play, interactivity and prototyped a proof of concept.  They also created HTML5 banner ads and other campaign assets.  The team including other IMM grads have made apps for TVO (http://ww3.tvo.org/apps) but in this case, due to campaign timing, the final development was outsourced.  What an exciting concept to play ping pong between two players with devices as paddles.

PIXELLER – Kit da Studio Wins FWA!

May 3, 2012

Pixeller -try it out!

Kit Man (IMM 2002) has been creating excellent work for years at http://www.kitdastudio.com and has just launched a mobile pixel editor called PIXELLER.  The app has just won an FWA – so major congrats on a great app!

Here is the story from Kit – enjoy!

Why make it?

Coz there’s no such a serious-enough pixel art editor in the market, so i decided to make one – for myself and for people like us [:)] which allows us to create pixel art anytime anywhere when we have 5 or 10 minutes free

Why pixel art?

It is a style that never grow old; and it always remind me the golden age of gaming – which means the age where multimedia craftsmen need to push their skills, imagination and playability design to the very-edge under the limited resources. I still think the games of the 80s from Nintendo are the best game to spend time with.

What was a challenge?

I am new to the imaging part of objective-C. So I don’t really know where to start; after I’ve done sketches of Pixeller on scrap papers. The solution is step-by-step and bit-by-bit. I’ve broken things down into very small single tasks – and solve it one-by-one. Like playing puzzle. And through which I become more confident in programming [:)]

It looks complicated!

It has been a dilemma to me, to make it quickly OR to make it like drag-and-drop pixel art editor. Finally i decided to support more features to make it a serious-enough pixel art editor – reason : tools are here to support creativity and it can’t be too limited.  In the end, it took from design to product – 2 months time

What’s next for Pixeller?

I’ve done 80% of what I’ve sketched on the design notes. The next step would be ANIMATION ! With the introduction of a timeline – and pixel artists can make an animated GIF out of it ! the video and features info will be here – http://www.kitdastudio.com/?p=513 and screencaps can be grabbed from here – http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pixeller/id511355490?mt=8 If you have more questions I would love to answer them [:)] Pixeller v1.1 http://www.kitdastudio.com

Sheridan Interactive Multimedia Alumni Win at FITC Awards 2012

April 30, 2012

Jam 3 Crew!

Secret Location Crew!

Wow!  What a night at the FITC Awards, firstly, I was getting there early, walked around the corner and bumped into Vincent Morriset coming the other way – the doors were not open yet.  So we went for a drink at the Office Pub (current home of FITO) and had a great talk about interactive storytelling, etc.  Highlight of the conference for me and it was a great conference!

FITC Awards - Future, Innovation, Technology and Creativity

I arrived at the awards just as the first award was being awarded – and it went to Jam 3, founded by three IMM alumni (Pablo, Mark and Adrian) as did the next award.  That was followed by Secret Location winning (Ryan Andal is there) and then Jam 3 again – after that, I lost track ;-).  Joanna Ong, graduate from last year was a Developer’s Site finalist as well!  Congrats to you all and all the other winners!
