Salpy Kelian has been featured as the Design Student of the month on the Microsoft Canada User Experience Connection blog.  Salpy is a graduate of the 2009 Sheridan Interactive Multimedia program with an excellent blend of coding and usability skills.  Yay Salpy!  And thank you to Qixing over at Microsoft for the feature

WordCamp was a success and a surprise.  I expected more coders for some reason and what we had was primarily marketing.  This makes sense as it became abundantly clear that we have moved into the realm of using social media to get people involved with our brands.  There were all sorts of examples given and tips on how to act.  These primarily were – be honest and get involved yourself.

Gesture interactive works developed by two groups of Sheridan Interactive Multimedia students are being displayed at the Ontario Premier’s Innovation Awards ceremony on May 15th at MaRS in Toronto.

The work will be projected on the floor and walls of the reception area and features gesture technology from Gesture Tek.  People will wave to interact with elements of our innovations. In one of the features, the names of the guests will be read from QR Code readers and placed on shapes such as atoms and wind. The letters of the name will then animate to gestures.

The projects are two of the Sheridan Interactive Multimedia one year post grad program’s client projects where the students work in groups with live clients. Another group is working with Infusion to create prototypes for multitouch tables like Microsoft Surface. Spy Films in Toronto is also working with a group to create an interactive video installation for their walls during their 15^th anniversary of their famed Media Agency Party.

The Premier’s Innovation Awards was created to recognize and reward Ontario’s top researchers and innovators that are successfully turning global challenges into the next generation of jobs for the province.

There are three categories of Premier’s Innovation Awards:

The Premier’s Catalyst Awards help build a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in Ontario by recognizing excellence and leadership in innovation.

The Premier’s Discovery Awards celebrates the research excellence of Ontario’s most accomplished researchers.

The third category, the Premier’s Summit Award is administered by MaRS. This Award provides research support to a small number of outstanding medical researchers, helping attract them to or retain them in Ontario and enabling them to significantly expand their research programs.

We are having our Sheridan Interactive Multimedia Open House at Function 13 this year in Kensington Market in Toronto.  This is the home of FITO – the largest Flash User Group in the world and also FITC – one of the top digital media conferences.  As such… we are thankful for Shawn and the crew for providing a FREE FITC Ticket as a door prize!  So come on out!

The invite this year is exciting as usual.  It was created by the students and in particular Rob, Salpy and Matt with theme and organizational help from all of us.   It includes an interactive augmented reality 3D portion.  You print a page and look at the page with a Webcam and it shows a surprise 3D figure.  This is something that we will be continuing at the open house in a very amusing way and also is involved in how we give away the FITC ticket.

Adrian Belina from Jam 3 Visits IMM

Adrian Belina from the award winning Jam 3 Media at http://jam3media.com came in to give a talk on Motion Graphics to the students of the Sheridan Interactive Multimedia one year post grad program.  Adrian is a co-founder of Jam 3 along with Mark McQuillan and Pablo Vio.  All three graduated the same year from Sheridan Interactive Multimedia and have gone on to form their own company in Liberty Village in Toronto.

It was great to see the motion graphics tips and tricks they use to add value to their client work.  Adrian gave a two hour talk and answer period that really solidified the learning the students have been doing in the Motion Graphics course.  We thank Adrian for his time and care to give back to educate the new generation of students.

Visit from Japan's Osaka University of Electro Communications - click to see larger

Japan’s Osaka University of Electro Communications came for a visit to the Sheridan Interactive Multimedia class and saw some of the new advances in Adobe Flash work.  The visit is part of an exchange visit between our schools.  The students were primarily digital arts and animation and one of the teachers taught multimedia.  We have now met the teachers a few times and are starting to get to know one another.  We had the same camera

SPACEMAN

It is fun working with the IK Bone tool – I did a little spaceman for an in-class example.  You can move the parts like a doll.  It uses code to adjust the helmet with respect to the angle of motion of the body.  You can use the figures to animate or you can let the user move the figures.  In this second setting, you can also use code to move parts – that is very tricky and still being worked out a bit in this early version of the feature.

We had another great visit to GestureTek in Toronto where Vincent Jon Vincent showed us around the gesture control systems – like Minority Report and the multitouch tables.

A couple groups of students are making applications to run on the GestureTek systems for the upcoming Ontario Premier Awards as part of their combined Multimedia Pioneering / Client Project curriculum.
